Weekend-long events see classic cars hurtling around the ancient, twisting roads of the pretty hill-top town of Angoulême, South West France. First staged back in 1939, it was used for Grand Prix cars and Formula Two voiturettes. The track hasn’t changed since that first race, it has a length of 1287 metres, and is one of the very few motor races to take place within the ancient walls of a town (as is the Historic Monaco GP).
This urban race track returned to use after World War II from 1947 to 1951 as part of the Formula 2 Championship, hosting events where famous drivers could be seen, such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Maurice Trintignant, Raymond Sommer, Robert Manzon, and André Simon.
The historic event was used as the basis for "Le Défi des Remparts" (1988), a volume of the Michel Vaillant comic book series.
The course itself is very demanding, twisting around the Angoulême ramparts and containing two right-angle bends and three hairpins.
